Guidelines

We encourage you to explore the relevant categories when submitting your entry. If there are specific aspects of your work that you’d like to highlight, even if they may not be immediately apparent in the chosen category, you can express them in the Director’s or Producer’s statement. We’re open to considering these unique aspects. Ultimately, the judges, who are well-versed in the innovative and critical spirit of these awards, will make the final decisions in these areas.

  • Nominations for the Outstanding Industry Contribution category are welcome from the entire industry.
  • For entries in any of the Innovation categories, there is a $25 fee, andthe Outstanding Achievement craft awards have a fee of $25 per award category.
  • Participation in the Outstanding Industry and Independent Spirit awards is free of charge.
  • Please note that only content created in Western Australia is eligible for the WA Screen Culture Awards. 
  • Please read all the rules and regulations below carefully before submitting your project. This agreement pertains to all work/s submitted to the WASCA.

Rules

  1. Innovation in Narrative Feature Film (Budget under $1M) presented by Limitless Studios
    • Minimum duration: 55 minutes
    • Film budget should be under $1 million
  2. Innovation in Narrative Feature Film (Budget over $1M) presented by Spinifex Brewing Co:
    • Minimum duration: 55 minutes
    • Film budget should exceed $1 million
  3. Innovation in Feature Documentary / Non-Fiction presented by Zarephath Wines
    • Minimum duration: 55 minutes
  4. Innovation in Short Film or Animation presented by AFTRS and ECU
    • Maximum duration: 45 minutes
  5. Innovation in Student Film presented by SAE
    • Eligibility: Producer/Writer/Director must be enrolled in a secondary or tertiary educational institute during production.
  6. Innovation in Television
      • Content designed to educate consumers or promote a specific idea, product, event, or place.
      • Can be screened on any platform.
      • Must have had its first public screening between January 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024.
  7. Innovation in Web Series or Online Content presented by RevStream
      • Content debuting on the internet, primarily intended for online release and consumption via a video-sharing site or unique URL. Can be a standalone video, series (with at least two episodes), or a content channel.

    • Single-track or song-based music clip.
    • Music rights must be secured
  10. Innovation in Game Design  presented by Nostalgia Box
    • Includes any game or interactive experience on online, console, or mobile platforms.
  11. Innovation in Commercial Content presented by Broadcast Gurus
    • Content designed for educating consumers or promoting an idea, product, event, or place.
    • Must have been publicly screened between January 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024, on any platform
  12. Innovation in Alternative Content (including Moving Image, Installation Art, Virtual Reality, 360°, Augmented Reality etc) presented by PAV
  1. Outstanding Achievement in Directing presented by City of Vincent
    • Open to all screen culture projects, including games, VR, AR, 360°, moving images, and installation art.
    • Projects with multiple directors are eligible; please specify your nominee.
  2. Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography or Visual Presentation presented by Camera Electronic
    • Open to all screen culture projects, including games, VR, AR, 360°, moving images, and installation art.
  3. Outstanding Achievement in Writing presented by Scoop Digital | Localista 
    • Open to all screen culture projects, including games, VR, AR, 360°, moving images, and installation art.
  4. Outstanding Achievement in Performance (Individual) presented by PAC Screen Workshops
    • This category encompasses various forms of individual performance:
      • Voice-over for games, documentaries, VR, or experimental works.
      • Physical performance in a film or artwork.
      • Motion capture in a game or VR experience.
      • Any use of body or voice that contributes to the meaning or narrative.
    • Please specify the individual you are nominating.

  1. Outstanding Contribution to the Industry presented by FeistyDame

    • Recognizes individuals or entities who have made a significant impact on the industry.
    • Contributions may include fostering collaboration, driving innovation, advancing professional development, or providing outstanding service across various sectors of screen-based digital and other media forms.

  2. Independent Spirit Award presented by Revelation Perth International Film Festival

    • Open to all individuals, regardless of background or affiliation.
    • Honors those who embody a spirit of high concept, high risk-taking, and high ambition in their chosen craft area.
    • Celebrates the innovative and daring approaches that push creative boundaries in the industry.

Jury Panel

Our Independent Selection Panel

All entries will be assessed by an impartial selection panel composed of three jurors, each with expertise in specific areas. Some panels will evaluate multiple categories, while others will focus on particular ones. To ensure objectivity, our jury members are professionals and artists from outside Western Australia.

Maintaining Objectivity

We take great care to maintain objectivity throughout the judging process. Entrant details submitted through the FilmFreeway portal will remain confidential and undisclosed to the jurors until nominations are received.

Announcing Nominees and Winners

For each category, except Outstanding Contribution to the Industry, we will announce three nominees. The winning entry in each category will receive the coveted prize. This approach allows us to celebrate and honour excellence across a wide range of screen culture forms and crafts.

Our Jury’s Mission: Celebrating Vision, Ambition, and Innovation

Our jury is on a mission to recognize outstanding screen artists and companies of all sizes, spanning various forms and demonstrating vision, ambition, and risk in their entries. We’re not simply looking for “the best” or “most popular” films as seen in traditional festivals. Instead, we aim to celebrate the most innovative works and remarkable achievements across the entire sector.

The WA Screen Culture Awards are all about recognizing the future of the Western Australian screen industry in the present. We encourage distinctive approaches and inspiring screen activities, whether they fit within established structures or venture into uncharted territory.

Bridging Sectors and Celebrating Diversity

Our awards embrace sectors that have typically stood apart from traditional screen awards, such as games and VR. We believe that these sectors can compete on equal terms for major craft awards. We’re dedicated to seeking work that forges connections across crafts and technologies, captivates audiences, and showcases the rich diversity of the WA screen landscape.

What Our Jury Values

Our jury places a special focus on the following:
– Diversity, Innovation, and Unique Vision: We celebrate works that stand out for their originality and thought-provoking subject matter.
– Technical, Narrative, and Creative Experimentation: We admire those who push the boundaries in terms of technical expertise, storytelling, and creative exploration.
– Continuous Self-Improvement: We are intrigued by individuals and craftspeople who consistently seek to evolve their skills, their work, and their tools. They creatively explore their field and the environment that surrounds it.

In essence, our jury seeks to honour those who take risks, break boundaries, and create with passion and imagination in the ever-evolving world of screen culture.

The Independent Spirit and Outstanding Contribution to the Industry awards will be decided by the Revelation Film Festival’s Director and representatives from five screen industry guilds and organisations.

Terms & Conditions

By submitting your film/s or screenplay to the WASCA (the Event), you agree to all TERMS AND CONDITIONS below in full.

  1. The submitter acknowledges that they have obtained all necessary rights and authorisations from other individuals and third parties as necessary before submitting the film/s or screenplay to the Event.
  2. The submitter guarantees that all rights and releases have been legally secured, including music rights, songs, etc and the submitter releases the event and all its members, affiliates, and partners from any legal action whatsoever.
  3. All projects to have been completed since 1 January 2018.
  4. Each submission must pay the required fee per category.
  5. Nominees will be advised by mid-November and will receive a double pass ticket allocation to attend WASCA on 13 December 2020.
  6. All submission fees are non-refundable.
  7. Submission of an entry gives the Event permission to have accepted work exhibited, photographed, locally telecast, and reproduced either in part or whole, for educational or publicity purposes. You can request in writing that your material not be used for such purposes.
  8. No screening fees will be paid.
  9. The Event Director may deny participation to any film unable to meet the technical requirements for a public screening of good quality.
  10. The Event reserves the right to make any necessary changes in regulations or scheduling.
  11. All selection committees and jury decisions are final.
  12. A project cannot compete or be considered for an award in multiple WASCA years.
  13. All projects provided to WASCA must be final and complete. No working titles will be accepted, unless by written agreement from WASCA.
  14. Up to 3 projects will be nominated for each award.
  1. Can I enter my screenplay into the writing category even if it hasn’t been filmed? Sorry, not yet – but please enter it as soon as it hits the screen!
  2. Do shorts compete against features in the craft categories? Yes, they will compete against each other, but don’t let that scare you. Some of the shorts we’ve seen easily compete with the features. Budget, experience, and the size of the team are not the key factors – innovation and achievement are what matter. Don’t be daunted – the jurors are looking at talent from the grass-roots up.
  3. I have a WA-made production, can I nominate someone involved even if they are not from WA? All nominees should be WA industry practitioners and based in WA. If your nominee originally hails from WA but currently resides elsewhere, they are still eligible.
  4. What does “made in WA” mean? To be eligible for nominations, a title must either be a WA production or co-production. International/national projects created in WA without direct WA production involvement are not eligible.
  5. What projects are eligible for Outstanding Achievement in…? All screen-based works, including TV, film, games, etc., are eligible.
